Chapter 6

With an uncanny sense of acceptance, Grace waited to die.

Suddenly McNab's big arms clamped tightly around her as they fell. He twisted in midair, his body protecting hers.

Just below the cliff, the hill sloped, and they slammed into it so hard that both of them grunted; then they rolled together, down and down over grass and dirt.

Sharp rocks scraped and gouged her and must have done the same to his arms, which were still wrapped protectively around her. Grace could feel him try to take the brunt of the battering, try to keep his body between her and the slick hillside. Shale splintered and scattered with them as they slid until they splashed to a stop in a shallow river.

The water was like ice.

Head dripping, McNab came up coughing. "Damn, woman! Can you do nothing without throwing your whole body into it?"

She sat for only the time it took to blink, then pulled out her dirk and flew at him, water splattering with her. "No! I can't! Watch this!" And she hit him with her whole body.

He fell back with another splash, Grace astraddle his chest, her dirk on his neck. He opened his eyes and looked up at her, his gaze moving from her face to the dirk poised once again at his neck.

She grinned down at him. She had him.

After a moment during which the idiot appeared to be fighting back a laugh, he said, "Och, McNish, we have to stop meeting like this."

She remembered the last time they'd been in the same position. Under the tree. "You were awake!"

He flipped her onto her back so swiftly she lost her breath.

Stunned, she stared up at him, her body pinned between his splayed thighs, his hand gripping her wrists so tightly above her head that the dirk plopped uselessly into the trickling water.

He grinned down at her. "Aye, McNish."
